Top places to visit on your next trip to New York!

With hundreds of languages spoken on its streets, few other cities can match the cultural diversity of the Big Apple. Here are our favourite places in New York.

Our favourite districts

1 – Little Italy

With its thriving Italian restaurants and cafes, no other neighbourhood in North America is quite as Italian as Manhattan’s Little Italy. Ordering a classic New York Pizza – with its crunchy, crisp base smothered in melting mozzarella – is a must! One of the best times to visit this neighbourhood is during the Feast of San Gennaro, which takes place every September and includes free live music, religious processions, and delicious Italian-American food.

2 – Chinatown

Conveniently located adjacent to Little Italy, New York’s Chinatown is one of the largest in North America. With a huge range of Chinese restaurants, shops and regular street markets, you can immerse yourself in the flavours and sounds of the Far East, right in the heart of New York.

3 – In and round Central Park

Probably the most famous city park in the world, Central Park is Manhattan’s great breathing space, over 2.5 miles long and more than 0.5 miles wide. Even though the park attracts close to 40 million visitors each year, it is so vast that you can easily get away from all the hustle and bustle and enjoy some relative peace and quiet. That’s why it’s one of our favourite places in New York for relaxation and getting away from the buzz for a while.

A good place to start is the park’s south-eastern corner – near 5 Av/59 St – from where you can walk towards The Pond and enjoy stunning views of the skyline. Take a horse and carriage ride so you can rest your feet for a while, or head to the Central Park Zoo and see its grizzly bears, snow leopards and other fascinating species from around the globe.

Further north, you can find the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s largest and most visited art galleries, with over two million artefacts. Then head over to Belvedere Castle, an enchanting folly with excellent views of the park and Manhattan. The castle is next to the Turtle Pond (unsurprisingly known for its large number of turtles!), and is just a short walk from the American Museum of Natural History, another must-see!

Out of Manhattan:

4 – Brooklyn

Brooklyn is a vibrant borough linked to Manhattan via the famous Brooklyn Bridge over the East River. In the last couple of decades, it has transformed into one of the nation’s most cosmopolitan districts. One of the best family attractions in the area is the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, which has existed since the end of the 19th century and has fun, educational exhibits ranging from Neighbourhood Nature to a Sensory Room. Then there’s the Brooklyn Museum, the second largest public art museum in the city, featuring hundreds of thousands of artefacts varying from ancient relics to postmodern art. In the evening, enjoy a world-class performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, housed in a magnificent Renaissance Revival building dating back to 1908.

5 – Staten Island

Take the free Staten Island Ferry from Manhattan and enjoy phenomenal views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the dramatic skyscrapers of New York City. On the way to Staten Island, the best views are from the back of the ferry. On the way back to Manhattan, the best views are from the front. Even if the ferry to the island were not free, it would be still be one of our favourite places in New York. Hint: make sure your phone/camera is charged beforehand!

Even if you can’t make it all the way to New York, you can still enjoy all the glitz and glamour of the city right here in the UK.  Book a New York New York party at Aintree Racecourse this Christmas and look forward to a spectacular festive celebration.
